In connection with our exhibit "Bundle Up: Battling the Cold in 1850s Kansas," Watkins is partnering with the Ballard Center on a winter clothing drive! During our open hours, 10 AM-4 PM Tuesday through Saturday, stop by Watkins to donate coats, hats, and other winter clothing items for community members in need.

Langston Hughes Creative Writing Awards: 7-8:30 pm, Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire, 66044. Since 1997, the Langston Hughes Award has sought to encourage and support poets and writers who, today, are continuing to present their life experiences creatively through poetry, stories, and non-fiction prose. Each year, two authors are awarded, one in fiction and one in poetry. The event includes the awards ceremony and features a reading from each winning author, followed by a reception with cake and wine.

NAACP Lawrence Branch Monthly Meeting: 9 am, Online event. Held every first Saturday

Saturday Morning Free Program: Nature Topics: 10-10:30 am, Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St, 66046. A 30-minute free program on nature topics will be presented each day. Programs may include a short video, slideshow and of course going outdoors to enjoy birds, wildflowers, bugs or a stroll through the park. All ages are welcome. Children under 14 must be registered with a paying adult for all family programs. No unattended children will be allowed.

Docu-Fest 2024 – LGBTQ+: 2-4 pm, WyCo Public Health Dept, Auditorium, 3rd Floor, 619 Ann Ave, 666101. SURJ KC Films documenting LGBTQ+ life challenges followed by discussion. Mama Bears: Conservative, Christian mothers discover their children are LGBTQ+. They ultimately make a 180-degree turnaround to become Mama Bears, fierce advocates for their children.
